A teenage girl has exhumed the body of a murderer after he came to her in her dreams and begged for her help.
Lázaro Barbosa de Sousa killed six people across Brazil in a murder spree in 2021, before police caught up with him in a bloody shootout.
But in March this year – almost two years after the killer and rapist was shot dead by police at his former mother-in-law’s house in Goiás, central Brazil – de Sousa’s grave was dug up.

Investigator Rafhael Neris told reporters that the 15-year-old girl, whose name has not been released by the authorities, was tracked down after being spotted on CCTV.
When arrested on March 15, she still had the dirt of the grave on her clothing. "It was pretty clear that she was the one who robbed the tomb," he said.
The culprit had confessed to exhuming the body after dreaming that the murderer was still alive and “needed her help”.
"The girl reported that she had been having several dreams in which Lázaro appeared and asked her to remove him from the grave because he was alive and needed her help," he explained.
The girl had been driven to the Cocalzinho de Goiás Cemetery by her 21-year-old boyfriend, police said.
"She was in a dream,” Neris said. “The whole time her [boyfriend] tried to warn her that it wasn't right and that they weren't supposed to go to the place, but she insisted a lot.”

While initial reports said that de Sousa’s skull had been stolen, it was later established the body itself was intact.
The girl may not face charges, Neris said, and the grave has now been re-filled and restored.
De Sousa’s reign of terror began on July 9, 2021. He broke into the home of Cláudio Vidal – killing the businessman and his two sons. De Sousa then kidnapped Vidal’s wife, 43-year-old Cleonice Marques, before killing her, too, while he was on the run from the police.
He then broke into a number of other nearby homes – often forcing the occupants to drink and take dugs with him.
On June 12, police managed to track de Sousa down but after a short firefight he managed to make his escape. He had shot three occupants of the house – wounding two of them critically.

On June 15 he was involved in another shootout with police, wounding one officer.
For the next week he was on the run across Petra Brazil, occasionally being spotted by police but always managing to make good his escape.
But on June 28, the killer’s luck finally ran out. Tracked down to the home of his former mother-in-law de Sousa was surrounded and died in a hail of bullets.
