Thug ‘beheaded girlfriend in front of onlookers after hitting her with dumbbell’

A sicko beheaded his girlfriend with a machete while stuck in traffic after bashing her with a weight.

America Thayer, 56, was butchered in July 2021 by 43-year-old Alexis Saborit who this week was convicted of first-degree murder witnessed by a group of horrified onlookers.

People in other cars and surrounding homes watched on in horror as Saborit hit America with an eight pound (3.6kg) dumbbell inside a car near downtown Shakopee, Minnesota in the US.

Horror spiralled into disgusted disbelief when witnesses saw the decapitation with one even capturing the moment Saborit pulled America's body out of the car and lifting her cut off head by the hair.

The judge in the case found the "nature of the assault" proved Saborit intended to kill his partner, and that his possession of a machete, threats before the murder, and their "tumultuous" relationship with "frequent arguments and accusations of abuse" showed premeditation.

Witnesses, disturbed by what they had seen, called police saying they had seen a man throwing a headless body out of a vehicle.

The couple were on the way to court for Saborit to make an appearance for felony charges alleging he set fire to their Shakopee apartment during a confrontation with police and that Saborit had attacked America after she told him she wanted to end their relationship.

After the gruesome murder on July 28, 2021, Saborit fled the scene disposing of the machete along the way. Police arrested him about a mile and a half from the TraveLodge Hotel where he was staying.

Saborit told investigators he and America had been a couple for several years, but on their way to the court hearing they got into an argument when she told him she wanted to end things.

There have also been reports Saborit told investigators he killed America because she had "gone too far" in her abuse of him and in her comments about ending the relationship, according to local outlet the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

Scott County District Judge Caroline Lennon delivered the verdict against Saborit, who now stands convicted of first-degree murder. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Saborit waived his right to a jury trial, opting instead for a stipulated facts trial in which the judge alone decided his fate. The trial took place in January, with the verdict due to be delivered in March but delayed.

Saborit had been in the Scott County jail since his arrest soon after America's decapitation.

It was not his first run-in with the law, with his criminal history including 2018 convictions of fleeing police and obstructing the legal process, a gross misdemeanour domestic assault conviction in 2017, and a third-degree DWI conviction in 2017.

Scott County Attorney Ron Hocevar said he was "pleased with the verdict as that is what we believed the evidence proved."
