A huge earthquake has hit Indonesia, local reports have confirmed, at a magnitude of 7.0 and 368 miles. The quake could be felt across the pacific island as Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for Indonesia’s Disaster Agency, said it had been felt in Surabaya, Tuban, Denpasar, and Semarang, Abdul Muhari. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the earthquake earlier on Friday.
The quake was at a depth of 368 miles, EMSC said, and struck at 4:55 pm local time (0955 GMT).
Indonesia’s geological agency has ruled out a tsunami owing to the depth of the tremors.
“There is no damage reported so far because the quake is very deep,” spokesperson for Indonesia’s Disaster Agency Abdul Muhari said. “I don’t think there will be any damage but we are still monitoring.”
Indonesia straddles the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a highly active seismic zone, where different plates on the Earth’s crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.
