North Korea launches ICBM with ‘new type of weapon’ in latest threat

North Korea: Kim Jong Un’s daughter appears at military parade

North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile with a brand new type of weapon in its latest WW3 threat, a military official has claimed. Pyongyang fired the missile between the Peninsula and Japan, South Korean staff said, causing panicked Japanese evacuations and alerts.

Officials, who called the launch a “grave provocation”, also alleged the test involved a new weapons system.

The system is believed to have been displayed at a recent North Korean military parade.

It is possible that the new weapons system uses solid fuel.

Tokyo responded to Pyongyang’s latest launch by issuing an evacuation order on Hokkaido Island.

Japanese Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada claimed the intercontinental ballistic missile weapon was fired eastward at a high angle.

It reportedly later fell into the sea to the east of North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida later called a National Security Council meeting in response to the launch.

While Japan eventually retracted its evacuation order, South Korea’s military was on high alert and coordinating closely with the United States.

The White House condemned North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile test.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said: “The United States strongly condemns the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for its long-range ballistic missile.

“The President and his national security team are assessing the situation in close coordination with our allies and partners.

“This launch is a brazen violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and needlessly raises tensions and risks destabilising the security situation in the region.”

She added: “We urge all countries to condemn these violations and call on the DPRK to come to the table for serious negotiations.

“The door has not closed on diplomacy but Pyongyang must immediately cease its destabilising actions and instead choose diplomatic engagement.

“The United States will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the American homeland and Republic of Korea and Japanese allies.”

North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un previously pledged to double down on Pyongyang’s nuclear push.

He called for an “exponential increase” in the nation’s nuclear warheads, mass production of battlefield tactical nuclear weapons and the development of more advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles.

North Korea also defended its missile launches as it alleged military drills between the United States and South Korea are merely an invasion rehearsal.

Washington and Seoul have challenged Pyongyang’s assertion by saying the exercises are defensive in nature.
