Humza Yousaf has been voted the new leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), beating Kate Forbes and Ash Regan. He will take over from Nicola Sturgeon as Scottish First Minister following a vote by MSPs at Holyrood on Tuesday. However, a new Express.co.uk poll has shown 71 percent of readers backed Finance Secretary Ms Forbes.

The three candidates have been campaigning to win support following Ms Sturgeon’s resignation last month after more than eight years as Scotland’s First Minister. The result of the two-week online ballot was announced at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Monday afternoon.

The SNP’s national secretary Lorna Finn revealed the result with 50,494 ballot papers received from 72,169 eligible members. Three rejected postal ballots meant there was a total turnout was 70 percent.

The leadership election was decided by the Single Transferable Vote system. Mr Yousaf’s first preference votes totalled 24,336 and after second preference votes were redistributed he had 26,032 which represents 52.1 percent of the vote.

In a poll that ran from 3pm on Friday, February 24, to 1.30pm on Monday, March 27, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Who should be the next SNP leader?”

Overall, 1,340 votes were cast, with the majority of readers, 71 percent (957 people), backing Ms Forbes. Meanwhile, 18 percent (235 people) voted for Ms Regan and a further 11 percent (148 people) said Mr Yousaf .
