Princess Diana wanted US move ‘for ex and to give William and Harry perspective’

Princess Diana planned to move to the US with an ex-flame before her tragic death, according to sources close to the late royal.

The People's Princess lost her life aged 36 in a Paris car crash just a year after her divorce from King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, was finalised.

And following the split Diana hoped to move to Sound of Music star Julie Andrews' former home in Malibu in a bid to give her sons a "new perspective on life", multiple sources including former staff members have confirmed.

In his memoir, Protecting Diana: A Bodyguard's Story, Lee Sansum wrote: "Then she told me: 'I want to go to the US and live there so I can get away from it all. At least in America, they like me and will leave me alone.'"

Diana, who was drawn to the States like her son, Prince Harry, reportedly said "nobody's judgemental here in America" and wanted to escape the paparazzi in the move.

In the memoir, Sansum said the Princess was about to make her plans public before she died and hoped the move would protect Harry and Prince William.

Diana's only hesitation was that she would have to leave her sons behind and would "only be able to see them in the school holidays" as she wouldn't be able to take them away from their royal duties – but that didn't stop her laying out plans to flee the country and escape to the Golden State.

In 2020, Diana's Butler, Paul Burrell told CBS News: "I remember she set out in her sitting room, the plans of a home in Malibu, California, the former home of Julie Andrews, and she said to me 'I'm buying this house and buying this house to give William and Harry a new perspective on life'."

The Tuscan-style property sat on a five-acre estate in Paradise Cove, Malibu, a popular filming location and A-lister haunt.

It was bought by Diana's then-lover, Dodi, who also lost his life in the Paris car crash, for an eye-watering $7.5m in June 1997.

But the Princess of Wales didn't plan to make the move with her partner at the time.

According to Diana's psychic and trusted friend Simone Simmons, the royal was still in love with her ex-boyfriend, heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, and planned to ditch Dodi to move to America with him.

"Diana was never in love with Dodi," she exclusively told the Daily Star.

"She always loved Hasnat Khan, the heart surgeon she dated before Dodi.

"She wanted to move to America or South Africa with Hasnat and was already over Dodi when she died – he was just there to try and make Hasnat jealous. He was just a playboy, not Diana’s type at all."

Simmons added that Diana used to "share all her most intimate secrets" with her while she was alive.

"She even told me she hated sex with men with hairy backs, which gave us a good laugh," she added.
