Downpours have already hit Britain. Norfolk’s border with Cambridgeshire flooded as banks of the Old Bedford River, above, overflowed. And the rain will continue this weekend.
Most showers are due on tomorrow. Nearly 40 flood warnings were in place yesterday.
The Met Office’s Helen Caughey said January will kick off with “frequent, at times heavy, rain”.
New Year’s Day is forecast to be “unsettled”, as “central and southern parts see further showers and longer spells of rain”. Amber warnings of heavy rain, and yellow for snow and ice, were issued for Scotland today.
In the US, at least 65 people died in an extreme cold snap.
The Met Office said that weather front has strengthened the Atlantic jet stream, causing “a succession of low-pressure systems” that will impact the UK “in the coming days”.
