Brit Woman gives birth while in helicopter after just five hours of labour

A heavily pregnant woman gave birth hundreds of feet in the air while being taken to hospital via an air ambulance.

Jennie Trevithick was being taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro earlier this month (December 5) from the Isles of Scilly.

But as the helicopter was about to land from the 55 mile journey, she was unable to hold on and gave birth in mid-air.

However, rather than panicking about it, she now claims that she couldn't have “wished for anything more.”

Speaking to BBC News, the 41-year-old said: “I just felt so safe – I couldn't have wished for anything more.

“In my first pregnancy, with my daughter, I was also flown out and when I found out the helicopter was on its way the contractions stopped and everything.

“But with this one, I could hear the helicopter getting closer but there was no sign of anything slowing down.

“I knew we hadn't landed yet and I reached down to feel the head and I was like 'OK'.”

The woman's entire birth time took just five hours from when she first started having contractions at 2am.

The baby's chord was cut when the air ambulance had landed, and the pair – and dad Hayden Simpson – were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, before returning home to Scilly the next day.

Ebbyn Josiah Trevithick Simpson – as the baby was later named – is just one of three to have been born in the air.

She continued: “It was a surreal experience. I was holding the baby as we were landing and looked up and went 'where are we? What is happening?.

"I would love to say thank you to all of them – they were all amazingly supportive.

“Everyone said it must have been so scary being in a helicopter but actually I felt super safe – I was in the best place possible.

“I couldn't have wished for anything more.”
