Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine is having devastating consequences abroad, with energy bills and inflation skyrocketing since the beginning of the invasion. The Western economic sanctions are backfiring on European countries, as energy bills and the cost of living have been soaring relentlessly. Ukrainian MP Inna Sovsun says Putin’s war goes beyond Ukraine and also includes Britain and the Western world.

Acknowledging the economic costs Western countries are shouldering, she said: “I understand economic hardships, but I also understand that there are some things which are bigger than that.

“There are simple things, such as respect for human dignity that will allow for a single, aggressive state to just come over and continue doing whatever he [Putin] wants: continue interfering in one’s country.

“But then interfering in the elections in the country, continuing sponsoring the troll farms that influence politics, inside politics of the UK, the United States and so on and so forth.

“That is what Putin has been doing. He has not only been attacking Ukraine, but he has been attacking the UK as well.”

“And I believe people need to remember that,” Ms Sovsun said

The Western economic sanctions imposed on Russia to deplete Putin’s war chest could have disastrous consequences in Britain, with energy bills reaching unprecedented levels.

Average households’ energy bills are set to increase by another 80 percent to £3,549 in October and could further soar in January and then April if the next Prime Minister – most likely to be frontrunner Liz Truss – fails to act.

But beyond the economic impact, MP Sovsun said, Putin’s Kremlin has already “attacked” Britain’s democracy through election interference.

The Russia report – a paper by the Intelligence Security Committee – found substantial evidence that Russian interference in the British economy and politics is commonplace.

The report found Russia has not only interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum but also in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.

British governments have “welcomed the [Russian] oligarchs and their money with open arms, providing them with a means of recycling illicit finance through the London ‘laundromat’, and connections at the highest levels with access to UK companies and political figures,” the paper reads.

Boris Johnson’s Government has refused to launch an investigation into Russian interference in UK elections.

In March, a coalition of MPs and peers from across different parties brought the case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), claiming the Government breached article 3 of the first protocol to the ECHR, which requires regular, free, secret-ballot elections to “ensure the free expression of the opinion of the people”.

According to the US Intelligence community, the US also faced Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential elections when the Kremlin harmed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign to boost Donald Trump’s chances of winning.
