Harry ‘saw Meghan as way out’ after wedding despite Queen’s job offer – expert

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle began making plans to leave the Royal Family only six months after their Windsor wedding ceremony, a royal expert has claimed.

After marrying in May 2018, Harry and Meghan spent one and a half years as working royals before controversially leaving Buckingham Palace and establishing new lives as celebrities in LA.

Return visits to the UK have been scarce amid rumours of a fall-out between Harry and his brother Prince William; their recent Jubilee visit marked the first time the Sussexes had appeared at a royal function together since their exit.

And now, speaking to the Pod Save the Queen podcast, royal author Andrew Morton has claimed that the Queen’s offer of a flexible working role was not enough to entice Harry to remain with his family in the UK.

“Harry was having conversations in a London hotel with Oprah Winfrey back in November 2018, just six months after they’d been married,” he alleged.

“So they were thinking about a different direction of travel pretty early on.”

The royal expert went on to suggest that the Sussexes were considering their royal split despite the Queen’s decision to appoint Harry the position of Youth Ambassador to the Commonwealth.

He continued: “Which was effectively the Queen’s way of saying, ‘you deal with the rest of the world, leave William and Katherine to do the UK where they will eventually be the heads of state.”

The podcast’s host Zoe Forsey commented that this role had seemed the “perfect gig” for the pair, enabling them to live outside of the UK for a while as they conducted their royal duties.

Andrew agreed, adding: “They were thinking about living in New Zealand, in fact they talked to the Prime Minister of New Zealand about it, so they had all kinds of plots and thoughts about their future, and it didn’t work out.

“When it actually comes down to it, Prince Harry is cursed with charisma but he hates being a prince and I think that he saw Meghan as a way out. They didn’t have to leave the royal family in the way that they did, but they did.”

This comes as another royal commentator suggested that Princess Eugenie was likely involved in helping “handle” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they visited London recently for the Queen’s Jubilee.
