Care home escapee, 91, dies trying to lower himself out of window with bedsheet

A 91-year-old man has died after trying to escape his care home in Italy by lowering himself out of a window with a bedsheet he had tied around his waist.

Mario Finotti was found lifeless as he dangling out of a window of the Opera Pia Francesco Bottoni retirement home in the municipality of Papozze in Veneto.

According to local newspaper Corriere del Veneto, he was found as staff changed shifts at around 6.30am on January 18.

He had tried to leave his room on the first floor by lowering himself from the window with a sheet he had tied around his waist.

The cause of Finotti’s death has not been officially confirmed, but the local newspaper reported that he may have suffered a fatal blow to the head as he swung in a pendulum-like movement against the wall of the building.

Finotti, who was born in Papozze and lived there all his life, is believed to have tried to escape due to loneliness following suspension of family visits during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the thoughts of staff at the home.

Although his true motives for his attempted escape remain unknown.

Retirement home director Luca Avanzi told Corriere della Sera: "We are shocked by what has happened. Mario Finotti was well, he was not suffering from any degenerative pathologies.

“It is not known what was going through his head because, from a psychological point of view, he was peaceful. Also, last week, his niece had spoken to the psychologist via video call and a good psychological picture of the elderly man had emerged."

Prosecutor Francesco D'Abrosca has since said that no third party was involved and therefore no one else is criminally liable for the incident.

It remains unclear whether or not authorities are going to investigate further at this time.

The emergency services were called to remove the body and Finotti has now been handed over to family members so funeral arrangements can be made.
