Police have found the body of a three-month-old baby boy wrapped in plastic and stuffed in a freezer.

The horrifying discovery was made in Corowa, a town in New South Wales, Australia, on Wednesday night after a family member raised the alarm about the welfare of Kevin John Patten.

Neighbours reported hearing terrified screams from officers when they opened the freezer and saw the infant's remains inside.

Kylie Patten, the boy's 40-year-old mother, was arrested at the scene but was released on Thursday morning having assisted police with their inquiries.

Forensics officers seized the freezer as evidence at around 3pm on Thursday, and a post-mortem is due to be conducted to determine the newborn's cause of death, Daily Mail Australia reports.

Police are said to be still working their way through the home on Church Street, which apparently contains a horde of miscellaneous objects.

Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke said: "Anytime a child is lost, under any circumstances, is a tragedy.

"Our thoughts go out to everyone affected, especially the family of the infant and our first responders.

"I would like to take this opportunity to request our local residents to respect that an investigation is now underway and that lead authorities will have more to say as soon as they are able to do so."

Strike Force Walumil, which will see State Crime Command Homicide Squad detectives work alongside local police, has been established to investigate the tragic incident.

Patten is believed to have lived at the home with her parents, Sue and Wayne Patten, for the past six months, having previously lived on the other side of town.

The mother had documented the newborn's life in a series of Facebook posts in the days and weeks before his body was discovered.

On January 6 she wrote "proud, looked so damn well cutie, had to…" alongside pictures of her and her child.

She also posted updates throughout her pregnancy.

"25 weeks? Babies heart beat is so strong (loud) that others (loved ones not everybody) can hear it," she wrote in July alongside a picture of her swollen belly.

"Aww sweetheart, how much I love you, I cant wait to hear/see/know you too. xox"

Announcing his birth in November she wrote: "Kevin John Patten – Mummy loves you to the stars n all the way back to earth."

Shocked neighbours told Daily Mail Australia that Kylie kept herself to herself and was quiet, only exchanging a minimal amount of words with those who lived in the area.

They claim that they never saw anybody stay over at the property, but her parents were a frequent site in the area for visits.

The front garden has been opened by police to allow mourners to lay bunches of flowers.
