The dominant Omicron variant is everywhere at the moment, with over a million people in the UK testing positive each week.
In the UK over the last seven days alone, 1,038,500 people have tested positive for the virus according to government data.
While many are still falling very ill – 1,724 have died in the UK in the last week – others are being hit with symptoms similar to winter lurgy.
For lots of people, this can be a nuisance that stops them from getting on with work and other things they want to accomplish around the home during isolation.
But now one doctor has provided a top tip to help bat away the symptoms of the virus.
How can you stop Omicron symptoms?
A doctor has said that if you pick up Omicron, over-the-counter medication can still help take the edge off your grim symptoms.
Speaking with Desert News, Dr Robert Quigley, senior vice president and global medical director for International SOS, said that Omicron symptoms, “may be difficult or impossible to stop”.
However, there are some things you can do to give yourself the best chance of combatting annoying or uncomfortable things like headaches and sore throats.
Dr Quigley said: “For those who may experience headaches, a sore throat or a fever, you can hydrate and take headache and over-the-counter cold medications to help reduce the symptoms.
“It is important to take a step back to evaluate your symptoms and take the necessary steps that work for you, whether that be getting extra rest, extra hydration or taking over-the-counter medication to combat more severe symptoms.”
A second expert, Dr Gregory Poland, an infectious disease expert at Mayo Clinic, recently told WKBT TV that the booster remains one of the most effective ways to keep symptoms at bay.
He said: “As time passes, vaccinated people become less protected, which is why doctors are asking people to get a booster dose.
“If you get that booster dose, in essence a third dose, your protection against hospitalisation jumps back up to what it had been, if not higher, so about 75%–80% protection. Data shows this virus variant replicates about 70-fold faster than the Delta variant.”

While there is still much debate and uncertainty about the complete and exact symptoms of Omicron, the US-based Centre for Disease Control, or CDC, lists the following:
- Fever or chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscle or body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
What to do if you think you have Covid
If you think you have Covid it is important you take a test immediately. Take a lateral flow test, and if you are exhibiting symptoms book a PCR test. You no longer have to book a PCR if you test positive without symptoms.
Be sure to report the result of your lateral flow test on the government website and isolate yourself immediately for 10 days.
If people in England test negative on days six and seven and are double-vaccinated, they are allowed to leave isolation on the seventh day.
This means people in England will still need to isolate for six full days from the day you either developed symptoms or tested positive.
However, from Monday 17 January, this is being reduced to five full days – meaning people who return negative tests on days five and six will be able to leave isolation on the sixth day.
In Scotland, people will still need to complete six full days of isolation, able only to get out on the seventh if they test negative on says six and seven.
In Wales, it is one day more again. People must isolate for seven full days, meaning they can get free on day eight providing they test negative on day six and again 24 hours later.
In Northern Ireland, people still need to isolate for the full 10 days from the day they tested positive on a lateral flow test but similarly to England, people can get out of isolation early provided they return two negative lateral flow tests 24 hours apart where the first is taken on day six.
They do not, however, need to take a PCR test after testing positive on a lateral flow.
