A man who killed his wife and three young children before turning a gun on himself reportedly feared losing his kids after he had forged a Covid-19 vaccination certificate, according to a prosecutor in the case.
The two parents, both aged 40, and their children, aged four, eight and 10, were found following the tragic incident in Koenigs Wusterhausen, south of Berlin, Germany, reports Reuters. They had all suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The prosecutor said the man thought he might lose his children after the forgery had been rumbled.
In a note found by police, the man said he faked the vaccination certificate for his wife but her employer had found out. That prompted the couple to fear they would be arrested and lose their children, prosecutor Gernot Bantleon said.
Cops were called to the house after being alerted by witnesses who said they had seen dead bodies in the building.
The shocking case comes as Germany has been tightening up restrictions to try to stem a fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic. From last month, employees have been required to show that they are either vaccinated against, have recovered from or have tested negative for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the government recently announced even more stringent rules in a bid to increase the number of people taking up the vaccine.
When the rules come into force, they would effectively constitute another lockdown, but only for unvaccinated people. Those who haven’t had the jab will be allowed to make only essential trips, such as to supermarkets and pharmacies, and will be barred from non-essential shops and all cultural, recreation and hospitality venues.
The German authorities are also looking at introducing a vaccine mandate by February.
Neighbouring Austria is also making vaccines mandatory, while Greece is insisting that all its over-60s are jabbed.
