Porn legend Ron Jeremy, who featured in more than 2,000 adult films, has been indicted on more than 30 sex assault cases dating back 20 years.

The adult film star, real name Ron Jeremy Hyatt, has pleaded not guilty against the allegations, which first surfaced last year.

The actor has been accused of more than 30 counts of sexual assault, including 12 of rape, involving 21 women aged between 15 and 51 years over a 23-year period.

The Los Angeles District Attorney's office said Jeremy was indicted by a grand jury last week.

The 68-year-old was among the biggest names in the adult film industry after appearing in more than 2,000 movies starting in the 1970s, and holds the Guinness World Record for "most appearances in adult films".

Jeremy's attorney said on Wednesday the actor was "innocent of all charges," reports Reuters news agency.

Last August, Jeremy wrote on Twitter: "I can't wait to prove my innocence in court! Thank you to everyone for all the support."

He was first arrested more than a year ago over allegations of raping three women.

He has remained behind bars ahead of a trial.

More alleged victims have since come forward during the long investigation.

The DA's office said the indictment involved 21 victims, dating back to 1996.

The counts include 12 of forcible rape, seven of forcible oral copulation, two of penetration while the victim was asleep or unconscious, and six of sexual battery.

The alleged offences took place at bars and nightclubs in the LA area, during a photoshoot, and at Jeremy's home, the DA said.

Police are still investigating the case.

The actor also starred in a 2008 horror flick where his nine-inch member goes on a killing spree after being possessed by an evil spirit.

Jeremy also made cameo apperances in Bruce Almighty, The Godfather Part III and Family Guy.
