A man almost died from masturbation when he suffered a stroke not long after ejaculating.
The single 51-year-old man was said to have enjoyed pleasuring himself several times a day, according to the medical report published in the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases.
This fateful time, he suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage where a sudden increase in blood pressure causes bleeding to occur in the fluid-filled spaces of the brain.
The man, from Japan, is said to have instantly suffered painful 'thunderclap' headaches after climax, and later began vomiting.
In spite of this, he managed to check himself into the Nagoya University Hospital in Japan.
A CT scan confirmed that he had subarachnoid haemorrhage as had been indicated by the symptoms of low blood pressure and disorientation.
This type of stroke which accounts for one in 20 cases, often comes on without any warning signs although it sometimes happens during physical effort such as coughing, straining or weight-lifting.
He miraculously survived the life-threatening stroke, but was required to stay in hospital for two weeks before recovering.
Doctors said he left in "excellent condition".
About 48,000 cases of subarachnoid haemorrhages occur in the UK each year and most are caused by a burst blood vessel in the brain called a brain aneurysm.
Dr Daniel Walsh in told the MailOnline that the spike in blood pressure "characteristic" of sexual activity such as masturbation can lead to an aneurysm.
Sexual activity has been linked to between 3.8 per cent and 14 per cent of all subarachnoid haemorrhage cases and taking Viagra or cocaine can increase the risk, Dr Walsh said.
"On a positive note, you will probably do more to prevent having a subarachnoid haemorrhage by avoiding smoking, recreational drugs and managing elevated blood pressure with your GP than abstaining from sex in all its forms."
Celebrities such as Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and American actress Sharon Stone have suffered brain aneurysms.
