Julia Hartley-Brewer lashed out at the European Union for “ramping up” the Brexit divide over Northern Ireland. The talkRADIO host demanded Brussels stop “messing about” during a fiery interview with Labour’s shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy. This comes as French President Emmanuel Macron warned Britain that the Brexit deal is not renegotiable ahead of the G7 summit.

In a defiant intervention ahead of his trip to Cornwall, Mr Macron even appeared to raise questions about whether Boris Johnson and the UK could still be trusted.

Dominic Raab fired back and insisted “the ball is very much in the EU’s court”.

The Foreign Secretary told Sky News this morning that the EU must be “less purist, more pragmatic and more flexible” on the protocol.

Ms Hartley-Brewer echoed this during her scathing rant this morning, as she pointed out discrepancies in the EU’s line of thinking.

She told Lisa Nandy: “The EU eastern border has fewer checks than Northern Ireland.

“That entire thousands of miles of border has fewer checks on goods coming in and out than goods coming from the British mainland to Northern Ireland.

“Are the EU being deliberately difficult and punishing us for Brexit?”

Ms Hartley-Brewer continued: “The EU could resolve this if they wanted to.

“At the end of the day, it is the EU that is ramping this up.

“Everyone knew that Northern Ireland was a fudge, they were left in this halfway house, half-in and half-out.

“They are doing this to be difficult. Shouldn’t Labour say to their lovely big friends in the EU, ‘Listen, stop messing about, you’re causing trouble, you’re the ones who are going to bring back trouble to Northern Ireland’.”

Ms Nandy said that both sides need to show “some goodwill, creativity and flexibility”.

She added: “Five years after we voted to leave the EU we are still locked in this loggerheads.”

Ms Hartley-Brewer hit back, adding: “But your party had quite a lot to do with that, didn’t they?

“If you were in Government we wouldn’t have left the EU.”
