A pensioner was left in “complete shock” after being kicked into a freezing river by two youths, according to his family.

The 74-year-old man is now “traumatised" and broke down in tears as he recalled the ordeal, his daughter Jacinta Bradbury said.

He also lost a treasured memento from his dad which was his only connection to him, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The man was fishing on the River Mersey bank in Warrington, Cheshire on Sunday when he was allegedly attacked.

A man dressed in a black gilet was filmed kicking him.

The OAP, who does not want to be named, was kicked with force from behind into the water and could not get out.

He was rescued by two teenagers, Ellie Hughes and Khloe Woods, 14, who heard him screaming for help and formed a human chain to rescue him from the river.

Ms Bradbury, a teacher at a secondary school in Bristol, said her dad was in tears as told his family what had happened over Skype.

She explained: "He said 'I didn't know what was happening I thought I was having a heart attack or something.'

"He was crying as he was saying it.

"It was so quick from his point of view, he went into the water head first. He grabbed hold of a branch but he couldn't get out.

"He was in complete shock. He's still pretty traumatised about it.”

She fears what happened is going to affect her dad's everyday life and stop him from going fishing, a hobby he enjoyed doing everyday.

The pensioner also lost a 'silver dollar keyring' in the river, which was his only connection he had to his father who he never knew.

Ms Bradbury said: "He's never known his dad and the only thing he ever had from his dad was a silver dollar which he had made into a key ring.

"He kept it all his life and he lost it in the water. It's the only connection he's got to his dad so he's also upset about that.

"What's important for me is that the boys face the consequences of their actions and it puts the message out that this is absolutely not OK."

The teacher is planning to take the two rescuers for coffee and cake this weekend.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

“He is currently in police custody.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the remaining boy.”
