Peter Phillips faces the crucial role of walking between his quarrelling cousins Prince William and Prince Harry at their grandfather Prince Philip's funeral.

The Queen has ruled that Princess Anne's oldest child will stand between William and Harry at the emotional occasion.

It follows their spectacular public fall-out, during which Harry said their relationship was now one of "space".

But Peter, 43, has led a markedly different life to that of his two younger cousins.

While he has largely shunned royal life for a successful career in the business world, he has been known to use his royal connections, starring in a Chinese milk advert in 2020.

Peter plays up his position as a member of the Royal Family in the advert, appearing against a backdrop of a stately home.

He appears surrounded by luxury as he accepts a glass of milk from a butler on a tray.

In one part of the advert he appears to be at a country manor, thought to be Longleat House in Wiltshire, while in another he is seen looking out over the Shanghai skyline.

He raised a glass at the end of the commercial as he says: "This is what I drink." A tagline reads: "British royal family member, Peter Phillips."

Peter, who like his sister Zara Tindall has never held a royal title, is 17th in line to the throne. The pair have never carried out official royal duties.

Royal insiders have long said that Peter is the Queen's "favourite" grandson.

Peter's own personal life has had its issues in recent years. He split from his Canadian wife Autumn in 2019, the mother of his daughters Savannah, 10, and eight-year-old Isla.

Autumn, who was raised in the Roman Catholic Church, was accepted into the Church of England before her wedding to Peter.

Without that, he would have lost his place in the line of succession.

Peter's parents, Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, are said to have refused offers from the Queen that would have led to him being born into a peerage.

His place between William and Harry at Philip's funeral has been described as an "elegant solution to a very awkward problem" by royal experts.

The brothers have barely spoken since Harry announced he and wife Meghan Markle were quitting as working royals in January 2020, while their relationship was worsened by the explosive Oprah Winfrey interview last month.

Royal biographer Penny Junor said: "The Queen has found an elegant solution to a very awkward problem.

"I imagine it has been difficult but she’s been all over the detail. It is such a terrible shame it has come to this. I think the rift between those two brothers is really tragic.

"After all they have been through together during a difficult childhood and adult life, I hope they can sort it out."

A national minute's silence will be held at 3pm to signal the start of the funeral service, which is expected to last until 3.50pm.

The princes will first gather with other royals at 2.41pm for the procession. They will leave at 2.45pm for an eight-minute walk to St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
