Meghan and Harry chose ‘trustworthy’ Oprah so Royal story would seem ‘reliable’

Meghan Markle’s friend Oprah Winfrey was chosen for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s post-megxit tell-all interview because the couple wanted their story to seem "reliable in the US," a Royal expert told the Daily Star.

Prince Harry and Meghan sat down with Oprah for a CBS special earlier on in March 2021 after news broke the couple would not be officially returning to their roles within the British monarchy.

The pair, who had pre-filmed the interview, made a series of claims against the monarchy, including that a senior member of the Firm had asked how dark Archie’s skin would be prior to his birth.

Royal expert Brittani Barger told the Daily Star it is likely Meghan and Harry chose Oprah to reveal their truth because she is a "news icon" and "very famous" in the U.S.

Oprah is also considered to be “very trustworthy” and has interview other Royals, such as Queen Rain of Jordan, before.

Mr Barger, who is the deputy editor of Royal Central, a US-based website about the monarchy, said: "Oprah is very famous here. She's a news icon. She grew up poor and has built up her brand. Everyone knows her for that and to be a good person.

"She had a talk show where she was always helping people out and she's admired for that."

As a result, "Oprah is considered to be very trustworthy here" so people who saw the interview with Meghan and Harry would know it is "reliable," the expert added.

The expert also claimed Oprah is a friend of Meghan and Harry, pointing out that she even attended their wedding, so the pair are likely to trust her with their story.

She said: "Oprah is a friend and attended their Windsor wedding so I think they chose her because of that.

"They know they can trust her so they feel comfortable talking to her.

"Also, Oprah has interviewed other royals before like Queen Rania of Jordan."

The interview was watched by millions of people around the world and even forced Buckingham Palace to shoot back in response to Meghan’s race allegation.

In a statement, Queen Elizabeth II said: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members."

A wider member of the Royal Family, Prince Albert II of Monaco, whose mother was American actress Grace Kelly, echoed Her Majesty’s statement, claiming it was "inappropriate" of Meghan and Harry to air their grievances in a public forum.
