A selfless mum died after shielding her five-year-old twins with her own body during a car crash.
Brave mum Hillarie Galazka reportedly threw herself in front of the two boys when she was killed at the age of 29.
Hillarie’s mother Jodie Kelley was distraught at the news. Speaking to Fox 2 Detroit, she said: "Her body saved them.
"The boys say they saw her open her eyes, and look at them and then she closed her eyes, never opened them again. They remember that.”
Michigan State Police is investigating the crash and said that the driver, who was reportedly doing 90mph, was driving on a suspended license and had five suspensions and two prior convictions.
Police were able to track down the driver at the local hospital after he fled the scene.
The full identity of the driver has not yet been released by police.
Kelley added: "I am devastated, I cannot believe that this man wasn't in prison for his entire life for all of his warrants.
“I can't believe he was behind the wheel doing 90 miles per hour in an SUV."
The twin boys suffered minor injuries in the crash, largely down to their mum’s sacrifice.
Hillarie’s brother Jacob Galazka said: "I'm just glad the babies survived a tragedy for the family.”
“Everyone loves those kids. Everyone loves Hillarie. She is a good-hearted, strong, beautiful woman. She didn't deserve this death.”
Hillarie leaves behind three boys, the twins and an elder brother, aged eight.
Two fundraisers have since been set up after the awful crash: one to cover the funeral and one to raise money for the children.
Kelley added: “It’s going to be hard. She was my firstborn, she was so beautiful.”
