Hungarian MEP Katalin Cseh demanded Ursula von der Leyen give answers to crucial questions regarding the EU’s continuous failings in the coronavirus pandemic. While speaking at the European Parliament plenary session, Ms Cseh insisted the EU had shown a lack of communication and scrutiny regarding vaccine procurement. She warned this was setting a dangerous precedent as European citizens deserved to know when, how and why errors had been made.

Ms Cseh said: “I strongly support a joint European approach in vaccine procurement.

“This is because it shields us from toxic divisions and helps smaller member states like my own.”

Ms Cseh demanded that EU give more clarity and transparency going forward to avoid further disaster.

She said: “But colleagues, we have been calling for transparency of vaccine purchases for half a year now.

“It is very good to have a commitment on this but Madame President, we should have heard this speech last June.

“It was clear from the very beginning that extra efforts need to be made to increase transparency.

“What we have had until now is a lack of communication, avoiding parliamentary scrutiny and refusing questions from journalists.

“In a crisis, this is a recipe for disaster.

“Uncertainty is everywhere these days and our citizens expect to have all the information.

“They want information about timelines, production, delivery, what will they get, when and how.

“If something goes wrong they deserve to know why.”

The Hungarian MEP continued to demand answers from the EU regarding the acquirement of vaccines.

She asked: “Who took the decision to refuse millions of extra doses of the front runner vaccines?

“Who negotiated, which member states were dragging their feet, we need to know that.

“Accountability and scrutiny are not unnecessary nagging but they are the cornerstones of democracy and one of our jobs as parliamentarians.

“I hope we will fulfil this job in the future as well, thank you.”
