Brexit: Boris Johnson has a ‘big test coming up’ says Lidington
Britain finally completed its exit from the EU on New Year’s Eve – four-and-a-half years after the country voted to leave the bloc during the historic referendum in June 2016. The UK and EU had spent most of 2020 in talks over a post-Brexit trade deal, which had seen London continue to be locked to Brussels’ rules and regulations on the Customs Union and Single Market. But January 1 saw Britain break free of those shackles, with the Prime Minister insisting the country has now “taken back control” of issues such as its own borders and coastal fishing waters.
The trade talks between the UK and EU had frequently looked to be on the verge of collapse as both sides launched scathing attacks against each other’s negotiating stance on several red lines.
But Charles Henri-Gallois, President of the French political campaign group Generation Frexit, has heaped praise on Mr Johnson for coming out on top against the EU during Brexit talks.
He launched a scathing attack against Brussels over their negotiating strategy but claimed a “successful Brexit” will send shockwaves throughout the bloc.
Mr Gallois told Express.co.uk: “I think that Boris Johnson has done what you have to do in negotiations with the EU.

“The EU does not negotiate in good faith. They don’t like a win-win relationship.
“They tried to bully and punish the UK as they fear a successful Brexit that will give ideas for other countries such as France, to leave the bloc.”
Mr Gallois said it is “great” to see the UK “take back control”, warning the country’s “successful Brexit” could pave the way for other member states to follow suit and “help the continent to be free”.
He added: “I’m in favour of Brexit because I hate the EU but I love Europe.
“I have many British friends, some of them within the Brexit Party, and it’s great to see them take back control.
“I mean that the end of the EU will be great for European countries.
“Brexit and a successful Brexit are the key to help the continent to be free.”
Frexit campaigner Mr Gallois also lashed out at the EU, branding it a “total disaster”, accusing the bloc of acting like a “sect that wants to punish the member that wants to take back his freedom” during negotiations with the UK.

But once again, he piled praise on Mr Johnson for standing firm against the intense pressure, claiming countries such as Germany – home to the EU’s biggest economy – were terrified of a no deal outcome.
Mr Gallois said: “The EU is a total disaster.
“I mean the interest of the EU countries from the beginning would have been to have a deal.
“When you have more than £80billion as a trade surplus, you try to find a good solution for both parties.
“But the EU has acted like a sect that wants to punish the member that wants to take back his freedom.
“They did it even if it would cost you this trade surplus. Boris did well and stood firm.
“Some countries such as Germany feared a no deal so I think that at the end they put pressure on the EU to get a deal.
“The EU eventually has caved in.”
