Return of killer clowns claims branded ‘stupid prank’ after terrifying threats

Threats of a "killer clown" return on social media have left kids terrified.

Concerned parents in Cleator Moor, Cumbria reported to local authorities, a post made on Instagram shown to them by their children.

An Instagram account called Clowns Cleator Moor had panicked kids in the town with sinister posts including a fake news report that a teen had been killed by a clown in the area.

Michael Eldon, of Cleator Moor Town Council, said: "I personally think it is a stupid prank.

"[The instigator] hasn’t considered the consequences of something like this, and hopefully it will be taken down.

"If you do see these idiots, don't approach them and call the police."

Any posts made by the Clowns Cleator Moor Instagram account have now been deleted.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said they had not yet received reports of the "killer clown" social media account or any other clown-related incidents, but encouraged anyone who wishes to report antisocial or threatening behaviour to do so by calling 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The first recent killer clown incidents occurred in the US in 2016, but the horrifying phenomenon quickly caught on and spread to other parts of the world, not least Britain.

This horrifying trend has since continued around the Halloween period, with youngsters dressed up in colourful costume, bright wigs and face paint, terrorising passers-by on the street.

Numerous reports were lodged in 2019, with a child in Brentford reportedly being chased by one of the sick pranksters and a knife-wielding "killer clown" chasing two children in east London.

Last month, pranksters were spotted donning the evil in Somerset and one in even took their terror behind the wheel as they drove around neighbourhoods in Birmingham.

A witness in Birmingham said they first assumed it was just someone on their way to a birthday party until the clown spoke to them and began cackling in their face.
