Alton Towers closes ‘until further notice’ despite planned Christmas events

Alton Towers has closed indefinitely despite offering thrill-seekers a number of Christmas offers for December.

The theme park revealed it will close until at least December 2 as England prepares to move into a second lockdown.

A reopening date has not yet been set with a spokesman saying it was close "until further notice".

Anyone with bookings from Thursday until December 2 will be given a voucher to be used in 2021.

A spokesman said on Twitter: "Further to the latest update from the UK Government on the response to the coronavirus outbreak, Alton Towers Resort will be temporarily closing from November 5 until further notice."

They added: "The safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff is our priority and we continue to monitor the situation at our attraction closely taking all necessary precautions."

The attraction has planned a number of festive experiences including Santa sleepovers at Alton Towers Hotel as well as a grotto and garden walk.

But as lockdown looms the events, pencilled in for December 4-6 and December 1-23, are now at risk of being cancelled, The Sun reports.

The park said it hopes to reopen by December 3 but will wait for further government advice.

Guests with pre-booked tickets on dates when the park is closed will have their tickets revalidated.

The theme park is in Staffordshire, which recently moved into tier 2 restrictions.

Boris Johnson has said that on December 2 England will exit a national lockdown back into regional tiered restrictions.

Alton Towers remains open until 4pm on Wednesday.
