The US president and main democratic opponent Joe Biden are due to battle over the most prominent topics facing the nation as the two aim to corral public favour in the race for the White House. Their respective partners Mrs Trump and Dr Biden, however, will not be debating – though social media users have erupted over suggestions they should.

Molly Jong-Fast, editor of the Daily Beast political news outlet, prompted followers by stating: “Omg Dr Biden should debate Melania Trump.”

The idea has since been repeated several times, leading Twitter users into a heated debate of their own about what the outcome would be.

One user thought Dr Biden would emerge victorious from any such event.

They said: “Dr. Jill Biden would easily wipe the floor with Melania Trump in a debate – not even close.”

Some thought the theoretical battle would go the other way, claiming: “Melania would crush her! Don’t doubt it.”

Others were less in favour of the idea altogether, suggesting it would be a waste of time.

One said: “Are the First Ladies making policy decisions? And if they are, should they? No debate necessary for those who don’t create public policy.”

Another thought the idea would be a distraction from the main presidential debate: “Liberals are currently demanding a Jill Biden/Melania Trump debate because they know how badly their candidate is going to do against Trump.”

In any case, both Mrs Trump and Dr Biden have attended the same events together in the past.

Both were at Mr Trump’s 2017 inauguration event, as well as the funeral for George H. W. Bush in 2018.

Dr Biden and the First Lady have taken different approaches the election year so far, with the former actively campaigning for Mr Biden’s presidential case.

In an interview with CNN this week, she said her husband is “ready” for the upcoming presidential debate.

She said: “I can’t wait for the American people to see Joe, to see that statesman up there in front of the American public.

“You know, someone who is, like I’m saying, calm, steady, strong, resilient.”

Dr Biden accused Donald Trump of attempting to ‘distract people’ with Twitter outbursts throughout the election run-up.

She also campaigned yesterday in the US state of Wisconsin, making a speech in which she discussed the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump has been less prominent in her husband Donald Trump’s campaign, according to analysts.

The First Lady did make a supportive speech for Mr Trump during the Republican National Convention last month.

Otherwise, she has been engaging in projects of her own, including her Be Best campaign which aims to highlight issues facing America’s youth.
