Rhys Jones’ dad says tragic son could have become Everton legend

Rhys Jones’ dad says his son would have become an Everton legend if his life had not been cut short.

Steve Jones is convinced the 11-year-old – who was gunned down by gang member Sean Mercer in 2007 – could have been England’s answer to Brazil star Roberto Carlos thanks to his wand of a left foot.

Toffees fan Rhys was returning from football practice in Croxteth, Liverpool, when he inadvertently walked into a gang fight and was shot in the neck.

And Steve said: “From the videos you watch, he plays a good game.

"You’d like to have thought he could go on to become professional but you never know.

"Every parent thinks their child is gifted.

“We always said he was going to be a Roberto Carlos when he grew up because he was only small of stature and he was left-footed.

"He idolised the Everton players.”
